THE SOLAR SYSTEM AND HAEN

A typical view from Haen's shores.

Lagunbiru is, as we all know, a luxury space station orbiting the resort planet of Haen below. Haen has a steady orbit about its yellow dwarf star, the center of its solar system and functionally its sun, quite similar to ours here on Earth. (There is no information on the other planets available, as they're uninhabitable and thus not interesting to those vacationing aboard the Station.) Because of the protection of the Station and its construction, one cannot feel the warmth of the sun or receive any sort of sunburn from ultraviolet rays, and the surrounding sky will show the two moons in their erratic orbit with plenty of stars to put the Milky Way to shame.

The planet is relatively similar to Earth - there's lots of blue which is presumably ocean and smatterings of land, but it's like someone dropped a tin of rainbow sprinkles and they landed everywhere. Questioning people about the weird colors will reveal that most of these are basically huge theme parks, and some are the estates of extremely rich Haenii (the residents of Haen). Fewer still, on the ocean, are some of the colorful cruise ships that tour from resort to resort.

On the surface of the planet itself, the skies are cast in perpetual sunset giving it warm, orange-pink hues and the constant relaxing state of a day drawing to a close. The resorts are built high and focus on every aspect of a vacation's most pleasurable moments with spa experiences available for every stage of one's day, personal maseuses on tap, and patient staff always ready with drink orders or something to nibble on. During the planet's night, there are very few lights visible. Some of the colored spots remain lit up. Most of the planet disappears into the darkness. It is not densely populated.

The moons' cycles leave little room for charting and they're not often visible unless one is stargazing at the top of Fantasia at the right time, and characters influenced by lunar cycles will unfortunately suffer these moody moons, but that also means that OOCly, you can fake "unfortunate timing" whenever you'd like.

None of the stars or nearby planets, nor any information obtained on the area's astronomy, will be familiar to anyone aboard the station as "nearby" or even "touched upon" in news or discoveries. They're a far, far way from home.

↠ The Residents of Lagunbiru and Haen
Like their Station, the people of Lagunbiru (and by extension of their families on Haen) are constantly changing. Any and all styles of dress, hairstyle, jewelry and makeup could be trendy at any given time - not to mention body modifications up to and including robotic body parts. Being more difficult to undo when the next trend comes along, the more extreme body mods are rarer to see, but definitely not unheard of. Lagunbirans come in every shape, size and color; apart from newcomers, all the residents are human no matter how they may appear.

The residents of Lagunbiru mostly associate only with those of equal status - or, where possible, those of slightly higher status. They will often make exceptions for anyone who's a novelty to them, which in practice usually means anyone who has recently arrived on Lagunbiru. No matter how interesting the new arrival, though, they quickly become bored and seek out new entertainment of one sort of another. Servants, workers, engineers and robots are beneath their notice; watching a resident of Lagunbiru, you would think any tasks performed by such people or robots were simply done by magic, with no external intervention.

LAGUNBIRU STATION

Lagunbiru Station, featuring the closed Fantasia dome top-center. Multiple decks and countless viewing screens.

↠ Architecture
Lagunbiru was originally built as a utilitarian, functional space station designed to serve as an entry port to the planet below and can accommodate up to 100,000 lives. As a result, the station is comprised of 50 decks, each able to be sealed off from all the others in case of catastrophic failure. Over time, Lagunbiru has been dramatically altered to suit the desires of its residents. Small cabins have been combined into larger ones; decks devoted solely to now-unnecessary functions have been redesigned to better entertain the inhabitants.

The lower decks of Lagunbiru are devoted to the vital functions of the space station - recycling oxygen and water, maintenance and engineering, storage for maintenance and service robots, the huge engines that provide power, and quarters for the humans who work for the station. The higher one goes in the station, the more elaborate and decorative things become - living spaces are bigger and more opulent, and entertainment options such as shops, restaurants, cinemas, VR rooms, bars and casinos begin to appear and upgrade.

The newly-completed pleasure dome is attached to the relative top of the station with the central column going down to the base of the publicly-available decks, placed so that the curved top of the dome faces towards space and roughly the size of six city blocks. Within the pleasure dome is a network of winding avenues, and the newest and most exciting of the entertainment options can be found in the dome. Simulated fireworks and weather can be displayed on the dome's ceiling, and it can become translucent to show the residents any interesting cosmic events in the galaxy around them.

For the most part, buildings are sleek, sharp and futuristic, primarily built with a metal frame and light structural materials. However, in the constant quest for new and different ideas, the aesthetics of various parts of the station are always changing, reflecting any one of the known human or alien civilizations for a month or two before moving on to something else. There is very little plant life aboard the station, but those high up on the wealthy end may have some decorative plants flown in - these are very expensive for others to obtain, as they were legitimately brought up from Haen and run through very strict procedures for the safety of the station, but would cost an equivalent of a bingo row or so (5,000c or more).

Lagunbiru Station is largely rounded, with every "level" split into 10 decks. The basement level is completely sealed off, but the sections above that are tiered and open for viewing save the private top 20 decks:
  • Level E: The bottom-most 10 decks that are dedicated to the engines, engineering staff's quarters, and other life support systems that sustain the Station, necessitating coded access. Save for a fast pass down to the Haen-gazing lounge accessed from the ground level of Fantasia, the residents aboard the Station are not allowed on these levels and they are strictly controlled via security.
  • Level N: The first 10 decks (Ground Level and above) that are for new arrivals and their lodgings, as well as more affordable stores around the Fantasia tower. This and Level J are both open concept and can be seen from the ground level. Level O is the "ceiling" and has blocked access and visibility.
  • Level J: The next 10 decks that are home to most external businesses outside of Fantasia tower with room to expand.
  • Level O: The first of public-access permanent housing spaced out for an airier feel on the next 10 decks, yet are not visible from the main decks beneath it. They can be accessed via the many elevators around the edges of the Station or via Fantasia tower going up through the center.
  • Level Y: The top-most 10 decks for the upper echelons of society, and the locals largely funding the Station. These are all private quarters and require coded access, and come complete with panic rooms of the utmost security.

There are not many 'windows' on the ship as such. For the most part anything that looks like a window is just another entertainment screen projecting a view that would be suitable for the environment - for example, restaurants in the pool complex have 'windows' looking out onto a beach setting; casinos have 'windows' looking out onto a night cityscape. All windows in a character's living space can, of course, be set to whatever they wish to see or remain transparent to show the stars beyond. The choice is theirs.

There are three exceptions: at the top of the pleasure dome, Fantasia's stargazing lounge looks out onto the real stars; if the pleasure dome is made transparent (which happens rarely for special occasions), residents can also look out at the real stars; at the very bottom of Lagunbiru, there is a Haen-gazing lounge which is not really advertised on the station but which characters could stumble on or ask for.

Fantasia, as an example.

Up the center, as the central point to orient oneself by, would be Fantasia tower. Contained within are countless boutiques and restaurants, cafes, and specialty nooks with state-of-the-art technology to draw others into a good time. Stores are constantly cycling in and out for the latest trends, going by in a matter of weeks, with a few cornerstones to remain constant in the cafes and restaurants.

The station is designed to rotate and produce its own gravity very similar to the Earth many have come from as well as the locals' home planets, which were very similar. There are anti-gravity options in the VR as well as some maintenance sections with Zero-G and the loading bays and docks.

One of multiple Zero-G chambers available for private bookings.

↠ Transportation

One of the modes of transportation available - skyline cars.

There are many transportation options on Lagunbiru. Within the main part of the Station, walking, elevators and moving walkways are the most effective means of transportation. Within the luxury dome, the open space allows for private self-driving electric cars for the richer residents and public transport in the form of electric trolleys. Powered skateboards and bicycles are also readily available and often seen around the dome.

Returning home requires purchase of a shuttle ticket back to their galaxy, which are scheduled few and far in between - these shuttles are heavily guarded by security with a wide berth between entrance to the loading bays and the actual shuttles, much like airport security, and they cannot be stolen; any attempts will lead to severe punishment. They largely travel to and from Haen with imported goods and supplies for daily life. No one gets through security without a ticket, which is purchased in advance at the bay of desks leading to the security checkpoint.

↠ Weather
The weather and sky under the dome is completely controlled, and usually kept to a pleasant, sunny day with a slight breeze. Occasionally a 'thunderstorm' will be programmed into the weather, with thunder and rain sounds and lightning effects but without any falling rain. The station is kept to a 24-hour day, with 14 hours of daylight and 10 hours of night.

In the main part of the Station, false 'windows' display the same weather as in the dome.

LIVING QUARTERS

↠ Housing, Upgrades, and Decor, Oh My!

A typical starting room.

Upon arrival, characters are assigned basic "cabins" that function and appear much as a cruise ship's cabin would, with decks sorted by wealth and starting very low - perhaps even just a single deck above the maintenance areas guaranteed to be noisy. They are very utilitarian and compact, most with a stall shower, a toilet, a sink, a double bed, and a small sitting area with a bar fridge and a sofa - three rooms total, though characters who choose to pinch pennies or particularly unlucky assignments may be given the bunk bed version with an entrance space and communal bathrooms. There is very little storage to be had, very little decoration, and it is certainly only meant to be a starting point.

The budget-friendly bunks and communal facilities.

Once characters have completed roughly half their bingo cards, they'd have the funds to move up to something a little more luxurious. Kitchens are a luxury and beginning characters will need to eat out or order in, as are bathtubs, but many places can still be found with them moving up or characters can purchase additions if they need a stop-gap between a full-scale upgrade in housing.

As mentioned above, plant life is scarce and expensive, but other upgrades and decor choices are readily available - they will essentially come from a space IKEA boutique shipped directly to your room with similar options in a couple of basic style categories, i.e. "modern", futuristic, rustic, and "basic". You know the one - the spindle bed frames for $40. Basic. Characters can damage their space and maintenance will be by within the week to repair it when they're out. There will be no consequences for minor damage (dented doors, holes punched in walls, stains) other than the immense guilt and shame they will feel from damaging someone else's property, which should haunt them like a bad case of herpes. Major damage (broken fixtures, ripped out electrical or plumbing, other such things that would impact function of the station as a whole) will incur hefty fines. All damage will be paid for upon characters vacating their given space.

Life-like projection walls are a possible (expensive) upgrade to simulate any given terrain or weather pattern, but there will be no lawns, and patios will not have the most excellent of views until they're on the upper resident decks with views of space through the pleasure dome or they have a VR upgrade. Rooms are numbered at player discretion (yes, you can be room 69), and as there are a hundred thousand living quarters aboard the Station, all are separated by likewise-numbered decks (remember: decks 1-10 are Level N, decks 11-20 are level J, and decks 21-30 are Level O and are private housing, with decks 31-40 being the locked upper echelons of the Station), and GPS coordinates will be an acceptable method of direction in giving out your room location to others.

Entrance to one's room is provided by a keyless pad beside the door that picks up communicator signatures, and can be cross-referenced with a list of characters allowed access to someone's particular room to allow them in - this can also be locked down with a simple "do not disturb" setting, and doors on the lower decks simply swing or slide open. The higher up one goes, they become more secure aperture-styled doors.

AMENITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT

↠ Medical Care

The state-of-the-art recovery center for the Station's medical bay.

Lagunbiru's medical care is extremely advanced. Serious diseases are unknown, and residents who don't want to deal with even minor viruses can elect to be put into cryogenic sleep until the annoyance is past. Minor and major injuries can be quickly and easily repaired with routine surgical procedures, and even some amputated limbs can be reattached with no loss of function. For those that cannot, robotic limbs are commonplace and can be made to look natural if desired.

Death from old age is perhaps the only common means of dying; many residents elect to be cryogenically frozen before or at the time of their death, secure in the knowledge that medical technology is constantly improving and they may be revived someday. Even mortally injured people can be saved by trained medical teams and placed in cryogenic sleep while their bodies recover.

Body modifications are also on trend in Lagunbiru, and anything your mind could dream up (or the more reasonable, desirable changes, such as trans characters desires to feel more natural in their bodies) are all capable for a hefty sum and a few days of IC downtime for proper surgical times and well-monitored recovery. The cost of care is high but it scales with the level of care received; skimping on payments could result in unorthodox samplings and annoying but safe side effects.

↠ Entertainment and Leisure

Examples of boutiques.

Lagunbiru is, of course, heavily geared towards a variety of leisure and entertainment options (that characters do have to pay for, unfortunately). Among the many popular attractions are casinos, bars, clubs, gyms and pools, arcades (with appropriately-themed prizes equivalent to $50~$100 toys or costumes and the like for the full arcade experience), and theatres - but the most popular of all is the Virtual Reality feature now present beyond just booths for rent, but all over the Station. These incredibly advanced areas allow a person to experience almost anything in full, vivid reality - including taste, smell, sound, and touch as well as sight. For the more extreme, the VR centers can allow those inside of them to experience things that would otherwise be impossible for any human. See the following section on VR for more details.

Casinos and the library.

There are also traditional forms of entertainment such as game rooms and an extensive library with many casual reading subjects (and no, it isn't all porn) - there is information on the Station's past, including its creation and transportation to orbit Haen, but most of the information assumes the reader considers this kind of thing to be common and doesn't go into detail on exactly how things have occurred. There is no information on the current residents or on kink bingo. There is information on Haen, similar to textbooks covering various things about Earth - climate, geography, history, limited archaeology, etc. There was no previous culture inhabiting the planet, nor have there been any political movements or skirmishes to note as it was settled with the express purpose of its climate and weather patterns suiting a resort settlement.

Most of this information can also be viewed via the communicators, and videos/VR tours may be accessed in the library via their VR equipment and holo-projectors. There are materials for very simple studies on various aspects of humans, as well. Psychology, anatomy, and other such textbooks are fine. The texts would be written for a layman audience rather than professionals who were studying these sciences and are clearly intended to gear toward sexual application or better learning for social structures and the like.

The library has special immersion rooms to rent where one can key in a book and be surrounded by atmospheric VR to accompany their topic of choice - a book on sailing would imitate the open sea, or a horror novel with a heavy rain and rolling thunder or an empty wood with the distant sound of footsteps following you.

Restaurants can be themed for various locales and specialties, ranging from diners to fine dining, five-star restaurants with all the finest and freshest imported goods, well worth the hefty price tags involved. Names can all be made up and treated as squirreled away finds in far reaches of the Station and beyond, provided the assumed names are not direct copies of Earth restaurants. There is no WcDolan's or Fanny's 24hr diners, but you can certainly find little Chinese restaurants, sushi bars, specialty stands for deep-fried delights close to the arcades, pizza joints, Mediterranean sit-downs, and so on.

There are no Walmart or Target equivalents but there are higher-end department stores that will carry clothing, accessories, and home goods.

There are no weapons stores, but weapons can be smuggled onto the station for an exorbitant sum (equivalent to a row of bingo cells) and careful concealment after the fact, and will be subject to confiscation if found by maintenance bots or through altercations. Specialty boutiques will carry most other items such as small blades from BDSM shops for medical play purposes, though larger items such as machetes or swords will not be purchasable. These tools may only be used in consensual acts as per the weapons laws aboard the station. Ammunition is impossible to come by on the Station, but can be made by characters who would know how with given materials.

All drugs are legal on Lagunbiru. Substances and paraphernalia are found in specialty boutiques once more, and as with the real world, quality/difficulty in manufacturing will scale upwards in cost, as everything is imported. On the topic of imports, other expensive items would be fresh food, delicate fabrics or artwork, live plants, and so on. Cheaper items would be anything synthetically manufactured such as vegetable protein turned into nourishment a la astronaut meals or repurposed goods from scrap materials aboard the station.

↠ Virtual Reality and You
To expand on the previous point, let's go into further detail on the Virtual Reality systems. The VR can be fully immersive and affect characters on a neurological level, overriding any inability (or ability) to utilize their senses, temporarily leave characters believing they're another species or in another location, even including the zero-gravity feeling of being underwater. By default the VR directly accesses one's mind and taps into the communicators for one's vitals and unique signature, so characters' physical and mental states are monitored closely at all times, with med techs in the wings. There are no ill effects from exposure to the VR, nor from "overuse".

VR can be found in rooms to rent for a pre-fabricated experience or can integrate into various aspects of life on the Station - the VR systems are now found all throughout the decks and all but the lowest tier starter cabins. Any VR possibilities within one's living space is limited to the bathroom and a "patio" structure, with sychronized windows. If one wishes to turn their bathtub into a cliff-side hot spring, far be it from the locals to stop them!

Themed rooms are available to rent or, for residents who know exactly what they like, purchase and customize on their own. Given a couple of hours' notice, those who work behind the scenes on Lagunbiru can conjure up any setting from a dungeon to a pirate ship by request. Just ask - and offer enough money - and it can be arranged. This also goes for recordings of their sessions, with choice selections of photographs from... "cherished moments" during their time in the VR.

Occasionally the pockets amongst the Station may go haywire and produce their own "alternate biomes" in alignment with special events, but it is not something easily stumbled upon outside of these game events. Any settings one has entered into the system will be saved and available for others to make use of or revisit, and the sky is the proverbial limit on scenarios that can be encountered or how they can affect characters who walk into them.

CHARACTER BUSINESSES AND JOBS

↠ Businesses
As of October 2018, players will now have the option to have their characters place a downpayment on a business space or invest in an existing business and have their own slice of the Station life to run in their spare time. There is no limit on what a character can create as a business so long as they can reasonably pay staff or run it themselves for most of the day. If it is something incredibly niche then it may not receive steady flow of traffic to sustain it, so choose wisely!

Please fill out the following form, reply to the thread below, and the business will be approved and included on this page:

If you have mentioned Station businesses in your threads to some degree of detail, please also comment here to let us know so that we can keep track of them, even if they weren't character-owned. (:

↠ Jobs
If your character isn't the type to own or run a business, that doesn't have to be the end of the line for them. While jobs were previously described as difficult to come by, as of October 2018, the Station's locals have seen enough of those participating to grant them some degree of trust and will now consider them for positions longer-lasting than simple part-time or seasonal work.

They can work in any of the boutiques, libraries, casinos, or other character businesses (cleared with the players, of course) to begin with, and after 6 months on the Station, they can be considered for security positions as well. This will not grant them access to secure parts of the Station, but will instead give them the ability to provide protection for their fellow Lagunbirans or be able to step into skirmishes with a degree of authority and escort problematic persons off for proper punishment.

Another aspect of work will of course be in the sex trade. Characters can be recruited by themed clubs to help entertain their patrons, knowing they will have some degree of protection should anything go sideways. This can be anything from typical pairings or private rooms to dance or pleasure one another in to exhibitionism rooms where patrons aren't able to touch the performers, allowed only to watch, or hire an escort to accompany them to other social functions or casinos for good luck and companionship.

Earnings will never quite compete with the kink bingo payouts, but it can come close and essentially double one's income.
